Evaluating Tone

With an understanding of how to evaluate tone, you can better evaluate the persuasiveness of a piece of writing.

This activity will help you:

  • understand connotations and how they impact readers
  • better describe how people feel about the topics they are discussing
  • write evaluations based on tone

The tone of a piece of writing is determined mostly by the words or phrases an author uses. Much of this has to do with connotations.

Some words or phrases have a positive connotation, while others have a negative connotation.
